Anti-democratic democrats: an inadvertent moment of honesty

Bev Perdue, Democrat governor of North Carolina, recently suggested that her state should suspend elections in order to get more accomplished in government.  (She later said that her comments were sarcastic and a joke, which are dubious claims, given the tone of her voice and the notable absence of laughter from the audience.)  Gov. Perdue has revealed what we all know about liberals: they think they are smarter than all the rest of us dumb rubes and should control every aspect of our lives.  Here's what the always-brilliant Andrew Klavan has to say:  http://pajamasmedia.com/andrewklavan/2011/10/03/the-left-vs-democracy-appalling-but-not-surprising/

Andrew Klavan is awesome as always.

Of course, Perdue and Obama and Friedman and all those other liberals show their utter contempt for our democratic system by their comments. I have been ranting for some time now about elitist Democrats and the incredibly condescending attitude they have toward ordinary Americans. Some of the worst culprits are the leaders of the party: Obama, Pelosi, and Reid.

However, I'm not quite ready to let the American people off the hook either. There are frankly a lot of very selfish, ignorant voters out there who select their candidates based on incredibly shallow considerations or based on who offers them the biggest handout, with no thought for the good of the country or for its future solvency. We can complain about our politicians until the cows come home -- and trust me, I will! -- but there's no getting around the fact that in a democracy like ours the voters are ultimately responsible. If America's elected officials are irresponsible and corrupt, it is the fault of the American people who put them there and who keep re-electing them. It was more than 10 years ago that we had a president who everyone knew was guilty of perjury, and yet polls showed large majorities of Americans wanted him to stay in office. What does that say about us as a country? We are ruled by dishonest leaders because we choose to be.
